Vilamoura, the town, marina and golf courses require some little introduction. This vast area of land has been developed as one unified project by Lusotur. Whist plots for individual houses and building have been sold off to smaller developers the core facilities remain under the companies central control.
Vilamoura is the only development site that we know of in the Algarve that does not suffer from untidy development and roadside tipping of builders rubbish.
Development of this vast area was never going to be an overnight happening. As the town has grown Lusotur has added new facilities, and that includes glf courses. Vilamoura 1 is now a mature course.
The umbrella pines have closed in on the fairways and there is shade to enjoy on the hottest of days. By comparison the 9 hole courses of Vilamoura 3 have an open aspect which carries echoes of Florida links. The open vistas across the course belie the need for precision to avoid feeding the fish.
Access to the courses is not a problem as Lusotur have provided a good level of signs to all the facilities on the area. However, even if staying at Vilamoura you will need a hire car or taxi, so large is the area covered by this new town.
Enter the resort town of Vilamoura and you cannot help but know that you are in golf land. It seems that the town is surrounded by magnificently maintained courseswhich just beg you to get out there and play.
From the pen of Frank Pennink the course dates back to 1969. As you would expect this is a mature course with established vegetation and plenty of trees. Gently undulating terrain and the umbrella pines characteristic of this area: 6331m. at par 73.
The name means pine tree. Play the course and you will soon see how apt a description it is of this course set amongst the umbrella pines. The course also has water features and is well known for its small greens which demand an accuracy of approach we hope you can achieve.
Built in 1976 again from the design of Frank Pennink it was extensively remodelled by Robert trent Jones and today provides 6300m. at par 72.
The creation of Joseph Lee and open since 1990 this is a 3 times 9 layout. The courses occupy flat land formerly marsh and arable fields. With a water table only feet below the surface the courses have extensive water features and abundant irrigation. Lush green grass in even the driest of summers. There is not a lot of cover out on the fairways and again care should be taken in hot weather.
Par Marina course 3180m. at par 36. Par Lago course 2953m. at par 36 and Par Pinhal course of 2935m. at par 36.
